SCHWERDORFF

In August 1914, Schwerdorff was in great danger: the trench line ran through the Hemmersdorff forest and it was there that the enemy intended to stop his troops. It was expected that they would have to leave the village at any moment. The parish priest, Nicolay, took the necessary measures to shelter all sacred objects and prayed to the Sacred Heart of Jesus to place the village under his protection. Fortunately, the enemy retreated and Schwerdorff was not invaded. To celebrate this, the parish vowed to celebrate a solemn mass followed by a procession every year on the Friday after Corpus Christi and decided to build a chapel to accommodate this procession. Work began on 7 March 1921, thanks to a subscription from the parishioners. The stones were supplied by the Magar family from Otzwiller and were transported to the site free of charge. It was partly destroyed during the Second World War, but rebuilt thanks to donations from the parishioners.
